Social & Emotional Learning For Educators Course

The Friday Institute brought me to consult and help design a social and emotional learning course and convening for educators and school leaders.

The Course

Social-emotional learning (SEL) refers to the process through which individuals develop the ability to recognize, understand, and manage their thoughts and emotions and the reactions and feelings of others. It involves building relationships, making responsible decisions, and handling challenging situations constructively.

To make the content easily accessible, we have organized the content into a series of self-directed modules, including a 5-hour Introduction to SEL module and a 10-hour module for each SEL Competency. Within each module is a Companion Workbook, an application activity required to complete the module. You are welcome to explore an area of particular interest or engage in them all. In each module, you will build a foundational understanding of how each social and emotional learning (SEL) competency is essential to and inseparable from student learning.

The course will be organized in alignment with the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework for social-emotional learning, which is anchored in five core competencies that are integral to student learning and lifelong success:

  • Self-awareness

  • Self-management

  • Social awareness

  • Relationship skills

  • Responsible decision-making

The Convening

After we built the course, we brought in several experts nationwide to create video interviews and provide feedback on the approach and structure of the SEL course. Here were the goals:

  1. To provide input and feedback on the specific content, activities, and depth of information to increase understanding of SEL

  2. To provide feedback on the connection to micro-credentials

  3. To capture the experiences and expertise of the convening participants

  4. To explore potential partners and dissemination channels for the course
